“Describe some climatic changes in the world. What may these changes lead to in the future?”
No one can deny that our world has undergone climatic changes throughout the years. These changes may be a result of the “evolution” of our Earth. Nevertheless, the human activity only can be blamed for the radical changes since the dawn of the industrial way of living. But what are these changes?
The temperature of the globe has risen since the beginning of the 19th century. Why is the Earth becoming hotter and hotter? The answer is simple: due to the wide use of machines and fossil fuels. The gas that is produced because of these activities is released in the atmosphere and prevents a vociferous percentage of the radiation to return back to space, thus increasing Earth’s temperature.
And this is only the beginning. According to scientific researches the weather has become unpredictable. For example, North Europe may “suffer” from extreme cold, and, at the same time, the temperature of countries in South Europe is approximately 20oC . It is hard for meteorologists to predict the weather and the weather forecasts are now inaccurate.
Nonetheless, the most scary climatic change our world has witnessed is the extreme weather conditions. The term includes unusual, severe weather with disastrous loss. Heat and cold waves, cyclones and hurricanes are considered extreme weather and, not only they destroy people’s properties, cultural heritage and ecosystem services, but they cost hundreds of human lives annually.
The climatic changes we are experiencing have tremendous effect on human life, both short and long term one. Scientists believe that the sea levels will rise after the ice of areas such as Greenland and Antarctica are melting. Hence, floodings will become an ubiquitous phenomenon, especially for coastal areas. In addition to that, the overheated Earth might have to face another problem, that of draught. It is widely accepted that the hot periods are no longer accompanied by rains. In the future, this will cause loss of cultivable areas and reduction of the amount of drinking water, resulting to hunger and diseases, as well as fights over the possession of water.
Moreover, scientists are pessimistic as far as the future of our planet is concerned. Species are about to be extinct, as they will not have the opportunity to adjust to the new conditions. Simultaneously, species will be obliged to move to other areas.
However, what is the most shocking aspect of climate changes is that they can affect our health. As the temperature is rising the contagion of diseases can happen more easily. Heart attacks will also be a common sight and children will suffer from asthma and other terrible problems related to their respiratory system.
All in all, the individual can conclude that climate changes will change our lives in the future with unpleasant results. No matter how things are predicted to be, by taking action now, the situation might get improved.
