The non-stop race
We could consider the History of human being as something similar to a race. A race which ends at the consecution of happiness. Every single person has a personal concept of it, and everyone tries to make their life better. Despite of all the achievements that have been carried out during History, there have been lots of mistakes too, from which we have to learn, not to be made again.
From the early human times up to now, civilizations adopted the system that was meant to be the key of happiness. Slavery in the ancient Greek and Rome, feudalism in the Middle Age, even both capitalism and communism -among other political and economical systems- are examples of people's attempts to live the best way possible.
Lots of 'thinking', gifted minds have also given so much to the human kind. Discoverers, scientifics, musicians, writers, politicians, artists from all over the world -such as Galileo Galilei, Lord Byron, Michelangelo Buonarroti, Chopin, Shakespeare, even true 'heroes' like Martin Luther King or Mahatma Gandhi- gave their entire lives to do what they did the best: create, discover or do something beautiful from which we all can now take huge benefits because of their work and effort.
It is now clear that there has been a long way to get to where we are now. The question is, what have we become? We live in a world where democracy reigns, and everything seems to be on its right place. Nevertheless, I personally think that there is a lot yet to be done.
For instance, most of world population is lack o basic food, water and accurate living conditions -in fact, a child dies of starvation every three seconds-. There's also a serious problem about Earth's weather, as it is changing dangerously: the damage caused by hurricanes and tropical storms is increasing, for the oceans are getting warmer and warmer, as poles are about to melt. Lots of species have already disappeared, and they will keep disappearing unless we stop destroying the very few places in the planet which have never been 'infected' by humans.
In addition, there are still wars being suffered by innocent people in parts of the world that accommodated people in our comfortable and danger-free society do not even know -even care, most of the time- about it existence. Politicians are losing credibility, and people trust them less and less.
It all seems to be quite depressing, but on the other hand, lots of achievements have been managed too. Voluntaries from all over the world fight against hunger, global pollution, diseases, armed conflicts and social differences, in order to help forsaken people who hardly can get by, in order to make a better world. Let's start taking part on the race in which we all without exception are on the run.
